The Department started functioning in the year 1964. UG (BSc Physics) course was started in 1970 and the first batch passed out in 1973.

PG(MSc Physics) course was started in 1998 and the first batch passed out in 2000.

Ph. D (Physics) was started in 2017. Department is recognized research center of Calicut University from 2017.
